Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May each year. The day honors and remembers the military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday originated after the American Civil War to commemorate Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. Today, Memorial Day is a day for Americans to pay tribute to all the men and women who have sacrificed their lives while serving in the U.S. military. Many people use the day to spend time with family and friends, enjoying barbecues, picnics, and other outdoor activities.
